about Broadgate Gnome

Welcome to the site which we hope is the definitive archive for Pop / Rock acts from the Coventry and Warwickshire area 1964 - 1974.

We've limited it (loosely) to this decade as it covers the most exciting and active period of the whole group phenomenon, when you could 'throw stick and hit a member of a beat group' and also a time when popular music was changing and becoming more sophisticated, before television was the major source of entertainment.

The A-Z directory covers bands from the 'Beat Boom' through to 'Glam Rock', but to put the acts in context there are also features on venues, DJs, events, record shops and local recording studios as well as local 'names' and a chance to contact us and put your own views.

The Chat Room will hopefully stir memories, provoke discussions and serve as a site for welcome contributions - is your favourite band here?, Why not?, this band weren't local ...and much more besides.

The site focuses on Coventry groups , but as there were so many venues in the city, it also covers bands from Rugby, Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth, Meriden, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Balsall Common, but not Birmingham. There are so many bands from there and much has already been written about 'second city sounds'.

The Broadgate Gnome site name comes from an 'underground' magazine published around 1970 - 71 and based in 'Gnome House', Humber Rd, Stoke. It contained articles on local bands, venues, politics and Coventry's 'freak scene' generally.
