the local
music press
Coventry Standard
Weekly paper which had a good focus on teenage culture and pop music. Andy Anderson was the 'Teen Scene' writer from around 1963-6, reviewing new singles and printing news about local bands. There was a good awareness of fashion and 'swinging sixties' culture, with some interesting, thoughtful articles about the pop scene.
Paul Connew and Heather Tayton were later contributors (1967-9) who carried on the tradition with
intelligent, well balanced observations on flower power, happenings, fashion and the local group scene.
Lasted until September 1969.
Coventry Evening Telegraph
Coventry's daily paper which had a good writer in Ken Hillman, who hosted the Tuesday singles review page from 1967-9, with a surprisingly catholic range of records and a well balanced view. Occasionally reviewed concerts by major acts (Hendrix being a case in point).
Broadgate Gnome
Where we got the name of the site from and an anarchic brew of attitude, politics, bands and great 'freak' atmosphere. Most of the Coventry underground can be found here. Ran from 1970-1.
Hobo
Similar to Broadgate Gnome, poems, local bands with slightly more emphasis on music and community network. Edited by Trev Teasdale, Pete Waterman wrote a soul page, there were features on the local songwriters and clubs and more of a 'get out and do it' attitude.
c. 1973-4
